In the construction of the underwater power line between the Island of Elba and Piombino, Terna wanted to safeguard Posidonia oceanica through an innovative transplantation activity that will be monitored for the next ten years.
This electrical infrastructure extends for 37 km, 34 of which are underwater. In some areas, for technical reasons, it was not possible to avoid crossing the posidonia meadows for a stretch of approximately 3km.
Consequently, Terna transplanted approximately 53 thousand Posidonia cuttings in an area of 1,650 square meters in the Gulf of Follonica: the seedlings were replanted on anchoring structures on the seabed.
An all-Italian best practice, which strengthens the connection between the national electricity system and the Island of Elba, with all the respect for the marine ecosystem.
