Wetlands
Wetlands make up just 6% of the Earth’s surface, but they perform an essential function: they provide water and specific habitats as well as combating climate change.
These are ecosystems that retain millions of tons of greenhouse gases every year and are therefore called “carbon sinks”.
Wetlands, if well maintained, can generate an accumulation of enormous quantities of greenhouse gases. Overall they contain about a third of the world’s carbon and, if degraded, would release the emissions locked up in their soil.
